Those of you on the East Coast might want to check out the Backspace Writers Conference August 7-8 in New York.

It is one of the newer conferences, but it has quickly developed a good reputation. Check out forum member Wendy Tokunaga's writeup on her blog.

For those of you who wish to attend, note that the Conference is being held at the Radisson Martinique Hotel, which is located on 32nd Street between Broadway and Fifth Avenue. This restored 1898 French Renaissance Beaux Arts Landmark will likely run you between $400 and $450 a night, minimum. Add to that the $395 conference fee and we're talking about a ~$1200 trip, not including transportation and meals (and tips!).

I'm not saying that it isn't worth the money but keep in mind that over a two day (make that ~26 hour) period there will be 200 people all vying for the attentions of a (admittedly large) handful "stars", assuming they all show up and all stick around to chat. If you're planning to drop your manuscript off with one of the 14 agents who will be attending you might want to first look up their bios on the Backspace Writers Conference website. Some, for example, specialize in children's books, others in travel, etcetera.

But you might just want to go to hear what other writers have to say. That can be fun too.

I just might. But I look nothing like my picture (at left). So my recognition signal will be, "I have no idea what you're talking about." :P

See my amended post.
